I miss travel. I’m willing to bet that Jeanne Stevenson does as well. The originator and owner of Destination Yarn, Jeanne is a fellow travel buff who memorializes the patterns and colors of each place by hand-dyeing yarns in a variety of colors and colorways. Based out of Cleveland, Ohio, she has run Destination Yarns since 2004, placing her wares with small yarn shops across the country and selling them herself at conferences such as Vogue Knitting Live! and Stitches.
Jeanne’s background is in architecture, and so it’s not surprising that she uses the computer program AutoCad to simulate the way in which each colorway will knit up. These range from tonal delights such as Bordeaux, a shade to delight every wine lover, to wild combinations such as Atacama, bright earth tones mingled with purples. One can also find speckled-type colorways such as Changdeok Palace, which honors the UNESCO World Heritage Site in South Korea. As one can see, the names reference places far and wide, from the Central Coast of California to the Chrysler Building in New York City. For those of us who prefer to travel via books and movies, there are also colorways such as Valyria or Winterfell.

Beyond the vibrant hues and varied combination of colors, Destination Yarns provides beautiful fiber to warm the body, head, hands, and feet with high quality fibers such as superwash merino wool and silk, The Destination Yarns website lists the colorways, breaking them down into different yarn bases. Passport, for example, is a merino/nylon blend at the same fingering weight as First Class silk, which pairs that fiber with merino.
It’s possible to buy Destination Yarns directly from Ms. Stevenson by going to the eponymously named website. There, one can peruse different choices sold separately and in a few kits that include a pattern to work with.
